Where the Game of Golf was Born

Tain Golf Club is steeped in history, dating back to 1889 when the legendary Grand Old Man of Golf, Tom Morris, was invited by locals to design a course in the area where the game of golf was born hundreds of years before.

Visitors and locals alike get a warm Highland welcome when they come to tee off at Tain today. Difficult hazards and deep pot bunkers make for a varied, fun and challenging round that can be enjoyed by beginners and seasoned players alike.

An Illustrious Neighbour

Tain Golf Course has the advantage of being in the same neighbourhood as the internationally renowned Tom Morris designed links course at Royal Dornoch Golf Club, which consistently tops the list of the World’s top 100 Golf Courses.

Our neighbour on the opposite side of the Firth may be more famous, but we attract plenty of interest from golfers who come to play Royal Dornoch and can’t resist taking a swing at Tain too.

The courses are complementary, share a similar setting and views, and each is iconic in its own way, so no touring golfer can forego the opportunity to play both.

Find Us

Tain Golf Club is easy to find just off of the A9 trunk road which heads into northern Scotland from Inverness, making for a convenient stop for a day trip from the city.

It’s even easy to reach Tain Golf Club by train from Inverness (a scenic journey taking around 1hr 15 min) – you can walk from Tain station to the first tee in around five minutes.

Golf Monthly

Tain offers a great example of the natural Scottish links. Protected by gorse and heather, burns and deep rough it’s a challenging proposition and one that can be extremely rewarding.
